"Not Too Old To Rock And Roll"

Royale #101
Barcode: None

Review first published: 23.05.2002

The Deep River Boys, a Pioneer group from the Vocal Group Harmony era. Group formed back in the 1945. Recording numerous sides for RCA, Beacon and other labels thru the mid 50’s. Seeing their popularity waning here in the States, the group crossed the pond and continued performing and recording in Europe.

This sixteen (16) track cd is a sampling of their European recordings. Hear the Deep River Boys as you never heard them before. All tracks were recorded in the mid to late 50’s. Were released finally on an LP for Park Records of the Netherlands.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised by what this CD has to offer!!

A little aside here! I had the distinct pleasure of hearing Harry Douglas, the lead for the Deep River Boys, at a UGHA concert in NYC back in 2000. It was Harry’s final performance before his death. The memory of that night will always bring smiles to my face. Harry was a SUPERB performer and a true Gentleman!!

Here now are the cuts from that Netherlands LP.

1. Not Too Old To Rock & Roll (Great Uptempo!) play

2. That’s Right (Rocker recorded by Chris Powell & Blue Flames and the Five Keys)

3. Shake, Rattle & Roll (Big Joe Turner’s and Bill Haley’s Rocker) play

4. Honey, Honey (One here that the Ah-Moors did back in ’48)

5. Just A Little Bit More (Still SWINGIN’!)

6. Itchy, Twitchy Feeling (Bobby Hendricks’ hit)

7. Rock A Beatin’ Boogie (Still Jumpin’!)

8. Adam Never Had No Mommy (Gospel flavor)

9. Settle Down (Jitterbug here)

10. Smack Dab In The Middle (One done originally by Charles Calhoun then the Jacks. Rocker!) play

11. I Shall Not Be Moved (Smiley Lewis’ tune. Gospel Rocker)

12. Slow Train To Nowhere (Good Swing Number)

13. Ashes To Roses (Pretty easy swing)

14. St Louis Blues (Standard done JUST RIGHT!)

15. Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin On (Not quite Big Maybelle’s, Little Richard’s or even Jerry Lee’s! Their own version!)

16. Rock Around The Clock (Bill Haley MOVE OVER!!!!!!)

There they are!!!! Sixteen SENSATIONAL tracks by the Deep River Boys!! A must have in everyone’s collection. Brand new for 2002! Don’t hesitate! Run to your nearest outlet and pick up this gem. Have a problem finding it! Let me know, be glad to help.

In Harmony:
